I was saved at the age of 8 but not born again until age 30. Why is that? How could that happen?
We teach others how to come to the Lord but we leave out one huge step and that is how to give ourselves to Him. How many times are we told that we are the Bride of Christ and yet we don't understand that it's a two way street, just as in any relationship.
We are told God loves us and we even say it all the time, yet we don't know what that really means. We have to understand that our Lord Jesus feels the same way toward us, as any groom to be.
Just imagine a young man winning the hand of a young lady, only to watch her pay attention to anything and everyone except him. Does that sound like a two way relationship?
We set goals, we work toward tomorrows riches, we buy things and even polish those things, we adorn ourselves and most times, we are too busy doing these other things to consider our precious Jesus. How loved, do you suppose He feels?
You see, the love Jesus feels for you is so adoring, so deep and so everlasting, we cannot conceive of it. It's a love far more encompassing and far more unselfish than anything we will ever experience for feel. The love you have for your very own existence can't compare to that of Jesus for you.
Born again. What is it and when does it happen? It happens the day your realize you too, have to enter into the relationship and become His other half. It happens the day you come to understand the depth of His love for you and learn to cherish it.
What is it? I can only describe in mortal terms. When you were young and in love for the first time, didn't you want to be with that person? Didn't you love what they loved and hated what they hated, merely because of your love? Didn't that other person consume your every thought? Didn't that person affect the way you lived?
When this happens between you and Jesus, you change. You become all the things your true love desires and you want nothing to do with anything He hates. You are born again.

How do I get myself to understand his love and be on that level? I an struggling with this sooo much and its literally driving me nuts.
Sorry I took so long but I wanted to make sure I knew how I was going to answer this.
It takes asking for it. First, it's true that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. So reading it,absorbing it does actually build faith but if you don't really understand what you're reading, it doesn't do much in the way of edification. So to understand it, you read a little and let it sink it and start expanding in all directions.
Ask the Lord to send you the Holy Spirit and then talk to the Holy Spirit, as He is an entity, and ask Him to let you see truth through His eyes, while you read. That's the mechanical part, now on to understanding.
Ask yourself this: What sort of love would it take to make you hang on a cross and stay there when you don't have to? Do you happen to remember when a love was fresh and new and you couldn't even think straight? Do you remember your first love? Isn't it that kind of love that would give anybody the strength to hold up to the things Jesus went through? Now you understand what was in His heart at the time and remember, He is also God so that means, that's the kind of love in God's heart toward you. Next, I will give you a scenario you can wrap your head around.
All things created by God was designed to represent the relationship between God and man. That is actually the reason for separating man into two forms, one with the seed and one with the womb. God is the seed, we are the womb and so we are called the Bride.
When a man asks a woman to marry him and she says yes, he does not have her yet. Why? Because the doubt is coming. She must live through that valley of doubt and come out on the other side, having firmly made up her mind before the man actually does have her heart. You see what I mean? Things happen. An old boyfriend suddenly pops up or she may be tempted to go out on a few dates, just to make sure her heart is right before walking down that isle. It's only after the temptations and after the doubts, when she comes to the day when she is standing firm on her decision, does the man actually now have her.
It's the same thing with Jesus. We are His bride but just because we say I accept You, doesn't mean He has us. He knows what's coming next and will wait because He loves us that much. We then go through the trials of doubt, we deal with faith and fear, we push our way toward Him but we don't feel it yet. The devil will come at you with everything he has. He is jealous of what Jesus has and will do battle. One day, you finally get mad at all the back and forth garbage and you take a stand and when you do, wonderful things happen. Suddenly, Jesus knows you are His and this crazy love thing happens, even in you.
Jesus is wise enough to know that from the very moment you said 'I will' the walls were going to close in on you and you would go for a shaky walk before finally coming to that final decision. He backs off because He wants true love. It's not true love until you have come through the fire.
So now you're walking through the fire and feeling lost and abandoned and alone. You have doubts in the night that you have to battle against.
Now it's time to read Deut. 2:24, when the wandering children in the desert have come to the river and making a choice. What does the Lord do? Nothing! He waits. He has already told you that you have won the battle and that the land of milk and honey is yours, now it's up to you to see the milk and honey instead of the giants.
It was the Holy Spirit that translated that section to me, in terms I could understand and it was 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps, cross over the river and contend with the enemy for you have the victory. Now stand up like one of my children'. :)
I was suffering over an old sin that I could not forgive myself of and after seeing those words and understanding what they meant, I stood up and rebuked the devil and told him to get his filthy hands off my mind and suddenly I felt something like a warm blanket starting at the top of my head and spreading down through my entire body and it was the Holy Spirit comforting me and I was in love. :)
Understanding the kind of love Jesus feels for you brings back a response. He loves you so hard and so strong and so sharp, He could lay down His life for you and He did. He proved it. His heart breaks when you become so involved in this world you forget He's right there with you. He will not force you. He waits.
And when you come to realize that you've been doing something that has been breaking the heart of the only one who will ever love you like that, your heart breaks into a million pieces, as though you just lost a child to death and the pain is excruciating. Only then, do you know the pain Jesus feels.
Come to realize that and you will be on His level.
